Erdene Zuu Khiid
A short visit to Erdene Zuu after work. Built in 1586, this is one of the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia but was later destroyed in 1939.
“Today the main, west and eastern temples have been restored and are used as exhibition halls for the religious museum. There are also 18 historical buildings still standing, along with the 108 stupas connected to form the exterior wall of the monastery complex.”

Jochen & Lijuan spinning the prayer wheels. If I’m not wrong, externally it is inscribed with Om Mani Padme Hum (Hail the Jewel of the Lotus) and internally there is a scroll imprinted with lines of repeated mantras…which means every spin (clockwise) is equivalent to reading many inscriptions on the scroll all at once.

One of the Turtle Rock outside the monastery. Not too sure whether these turtles at four different locations used to mark the boundaries of the ancient city, acting as guardians or were they the stone foundation of the palace or both?
